History

Limnos is an island of north Aegean. Its name is probably prehellenic and means white, maybe due to the white sight that it shows from the side of the sea.
Acccording to Welker, Limnos means seeded field and indeed, the biggest part of its ground is cultivable.
In the island there are relics of at least 14 neolithic settlements with most important that of Poliohni, having a history of 6 thousand years. The archaeologists discovered seven cities built one above the other.
It was honoured by the three big tragic poets, Aishilo, Sophoclis, Evripidis. Its first residents were the Sinties.
After the destruction of 1922 it became the place of reception and care for thousands of refugees from Ionia.
